Prayer, Science, and Your Brain

Science is Catching Up to Faith

What if science could actually prove that prayer and talking to God actually rewires your brain? Neuroscientist Andrew Newberg puts it simply: “I think we are wired for the supernatural.”

Today, psychologists are fascinated by the physical benefits of prayer on the human brain. The results are undeniable—especially when someone experiences hearing the voice of God. Much like going to the gym strengthens your muscles, regular prayer strengthens your brain. Studies show it increases neuroplasticity, helping your brain rewire itself, calms the fear center, and boosts cognitive function.

The Science Behind Journaling

Science has long supported the idea that writing down your thoughts on paper declutters your mind, improves brain function, enhances emotional well-being, and increases mindfulness. (Interestingly, both prayer and journaling can fall under the category of “mindfulness.”)

Decluttering your thoughts reduces stress and anxiety. When you journal, you’re doing something tangible with your emotions instead of bottling them up. Similar to talk therapy, journaling organizes your thoughts, helping you process them clearly.

It also helps you name your emotions accurately—a powerful therapeutic tool to address what is truly hurting. For example, you may feel anger toward a friend who broke a promise. As you journal, you might realize that underneath the anger lies hurt, betrayal, sadness, or even humiliation. Recognizing these vulnerable emotions can help you heal and may even guide you toward honest, reconciling conversation with your friend. Journaling allows your thoughts and feelings to be expressed “out loud,” helping you feel more in tune with your mind and heart.

Prayer Journaling: A Personal Testimony

When I pour out my unfiltered, raw emotions before the Lord, I receive true comfort in ways I cannot find anywhere else. These are not polished, "holy" emotions— they are honest, sometimes messy, and entirely authentic. If He is truly all-knowing, He already knows how we feel. Admitting our emotions to Him allows us to be honest with ourselves and invite holy communion, where He can meet us in our heartaches.

Prayer journaling allows me to process slowly, untangling my thoughts before Him and inviting Him into them. In that stillness, I begin to recognize His voice— His truth gently speaking over me. I write His loving words as they come. His ministry to my heart is unlike anything else. The words I write down stay with me for years. True, raw healing and closeness to the Father unlike any other.
